Indulge, appreciate and learn all about great food on this roaming food tour.
Learn Great Foods tours will appeal to the foodie and the travel buff in you. They are educational but fun oppoprtunities to learn about sustainable food through hands on experiences (and plenty of eating). The main kitchen is located in the Hathaway Hall at the Campbell Center in Mt. Carroll, but the tours take place year-round in multiple states. Our tour centered in and around Mount Carroll. We kicked off the three-day tour with a wine-, cheese-, and chocolate-tasting at the Learn Great Foods kitchen. The experience continued the next morning at a local Farmer's Market, where we interviewed local producers and purchased produce that a local chef then transformed into a luscious picnic lunch (featuring wine, two fresh breads, sauted shitake mushrooms, pesto, cold broccoli/melon/tomato/red onion salad, cheese and peach pie ... not your typical picnic fare). The day continued with farm and winery tours and wrapped up with a cooking class and another gourmet meal. The last day was all about herbs, as the group toured an herb garden, took an herb-based cooking class and ate yet another gourmet meal. Prices start at $50 per person for a day tour up to $225 for a weekend. Tours take place caravan style--participants follow the leader from place to place in their own cars. Lodging isn't included. It's a unique experience that allows you time to stop and think about food and where it come from--and, along the way, travel through lovely countryside, meet new people and eat some great food.
