This classy yet casual restaurant in downtown Rochester specializes in "flown-in fresh" seafood. City Caf has fostered relationships with fishers in Florida, Puget Sound and other maritime hot spots, ensuring that a steady supply of high-quality seafood arrives at the restaurant within 36 hours of being pulled from the sea (from suppliers using sustainable fishing practices). Asian flavors inspire many of the seafood dishes. The Thai Noodle Bowl features shrimp and scallops over rice noodles. When we visited, the noodles were a little limp, but the deliciously tender scallops and nicely fragrant sauce made up for it. The caf's mussels are consistently large and fresh, perfectly complemented by a Thai curry or a white wine sauce. Other favorites include Parmesan-crusted grouper and Asian grilled shrimp salad. Most seafood entrees run between $15 and $20, though some prices vary with current market prices. The caf's dcor is eclectic and pleasant. Old chandeliers, schoolhouse lights and paper stars dangle from the high ceilings. The oak floor is reclaimed wood from old pickle barrels. Century-old wainscoting wraps around exposed-brick walls decorated with large murals. It's a quirky, creative environment that seems to mirror the menu.
