Simple coffee-shop looks belie this local favorite's inventive menu of fresh, well-prepared meals.
Across from St. Mary's Hospital, this restaurant is every bit as much a local fixture in Rochester as the city's resident geese for which it's named. Everything here is homemade from fresh ingredients, right down to the salad dressings. Don't let the simple dcor fool you. Since 1984, Canadian Honker has served up meals like Parmesan-encrusted walleye, apple-cinnamon pork chops and raved-about slow-cooked barbecue ribs. Entrees run $10 to $15. Friday nights bring all-you-can-eat walleye and shrimp; Saturday nights are known for prime rib. The lunch menu has a good roster of homemade soups and sandwiches (all under $9), like the Honker Melt--grilled turkey, swiss cheese and cole slaw stacked on Vienna bread. The Canadian Honker is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a particularly good spot for dessert and coffee. Settle in with nice coffee drink from the espresso bar and a slice of Bunnie's coconut cake, an ultra-moist cake topped with creamy coconut-flecked frostingt. Or, take things in a different direction: Sip a coconut-cake-inspired martini and stick around for the live music offered every Friday and Saturday night.
