Editor's Review

Locals, visitors and Canada geese all congregate at this pretty park.
An old millpond is the centerpiece of this attractive park just north of downtown Rochester. Walk or cycle its perimeter trail or cruise the waterway by canoe or paddleboat (rentals available). The park also includes a public swimming pool and children's adventure playground. You'll no doubt be accompanied by Rochester's most well-known residents, Canada geese. Thousands of geese congregate here, a number that swells to as many as 35,000 in winter, thanks to a nearby power plant that keeps the lake ice free. The city has a bit of a love/hate relationship with the birds. Honking Canada geese provide the soundtrack of Rochester and a sort of unofficial city brand. (There's a Canadian Honker restaurant, Rochester Honkers baseball team, etc.) But there's some concern that the large numbers are polluting the park, resulting in some sloppy-looking fencing around much of the lake to discourage the birds. Geese or no geese, Silver Lake is an alluring place for recreation or relaxation.
