Editor's Review

The Scandinavian rolls and pastries are delicious at this bakery and caf, which uses old-world recipes along with some creative new twists.

Filled with Scandinavian flavors, Jenny Lind Bakery takes its name from a slice of Swedish-American history--Lind was a famous Swedish opera singer who toured America with circus impresario P.T. Barnum in 1850. The other half of this business, Smokey Row Caf, is named after the part of town where pottery workers used to live. Ruth Raich, who has worked as a pastry chef in Minneapolis restaurants, moved her bakery here from Stockholm, Wisconsin. The strip-mall locale isn't fancy, but it's a clean, pleasant spot where locals chat over coffee or sit with laptops. The bakery's window displays an impressive array of tempting Scandinavian baked goods. Try the moist, soft Icelandic almond roll, which has almond in its sugar frosting. The owner uses her grandmother's recipe from Sweden for the chewy, flavorful cardamom rolls, which are something of an acquired taste -- popular among Minnesotans of Scandinavian heritage, unfamiliar to a lot of other people. It's great for dunking in coffee, which Swedes call "dopping." The owner also makes nutty, crunchy granola using her own formula, letting fruit and yogurt add the sweetness. And the bakery sells Swedish tea ring pastries, European-style cakes (which are light and not too rich), hearty Norwegian "health bread," homemade soups and quiche. The caf serves breakfast, including hot cereal and burritos. Lunch fare includes sandwiches and wraps.
