With a history that dates to the 1920s, the Homestead resort curves along the Leelanau Peninsula in Northwestern Michigan, with 350 acres of wooded, rolling hills and dunes, including a mile of prime Lake Michigan beach. It stands ready to welcome people needing respite from life's bustle. The property has a variety of lodgings, including two small resort hotels, a rustic lodge and a historic inn (in total, 122 guest rooms and suites ranging from one to four bedrooms). Basic room rates start at $112, while five-bedroom condo rates start at $376.
The Homestead has built a reputation as a wedding destination, with guests coming from across the country to witness vows exchanged atop a dune overlooking Lake Michigan and along the beach. Foodies from around the region find their way to Nonna's, a farm-to-table Italian restaurant that celebrates seasonal bounty and changes the menu weekly. Below Nonna’s, Beppi’s is a more casual alternative for pizzas and salads. Cavanaugh's offers a selection of wines, cheeses, grocery items, sandwiches and soups. Outdoor pools, tennis courts, an on-site fly-fishing school, the Dave Pelz Golf School and Spa Amiri, with its outdoor lounge areas that overlook the lake, give guests places to refresh and recharge during their trip. The resort also owns the nearby Manitou Passage Golf Club, an Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole course that opened in June 2010 after an extensive renovation.
In winter months, The Homestead operates a small downhill ski area, Bay Mountain, right in the heart of the resort. Three chairlifts serve open, gentle slopes best suited for beginners. It’s most notable for the expansive views of Lake Michigan. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers can access 11 kilometers of trails (ungroomed) from the resort village that are on Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore property. The village also maintains a small ice rink, with skate rentals available. The Homestead is open daily for lodging guests, but most of its facilities—the ski hill, the spa, the shops—operate Friday through Sunday only. It switches to daily operation over the Christmas/New Years holidays.
