You can find just about any kind of seafood at this casual little market, including shrimp, squid, lobster tails and even frog legs, but most customers opt for local fish like walleye served in baskets with beer-battered fries and slaw ($7.25 to $9.25). Cold beer, gourmet cheeses, wild rice and pasta salads are also available to go.
The specialty chowders are a good warm-up on rainy days ($4.75 for a 12-ounce serving). A smoky trout version with bacon, celery and potatoes was flavorful and yummy, if a bit thin; we preferred it to the creamy scalloped corn chowder, which tasted like it was made with canned corn. Dockside also sells fresh and frozen fish, as well as peel-and-eat shrimp (half a pound for $5.95), fishcakes, sandwich wraps, smoked salmon and whitefish spreads—great for pulling together a quick picnic to enjoy at Grand Marais’ scenic Artists Point. Or, if you time a visit just right, you can sit outside and watch the Hjordis sailboat from the neighboring North House Folk School unfurl and catch the wind.
