Editor's Review

At this romantic rural Michigan getaway, slowing down is practically a requirement.

If you come to Castle in the Country, you must realize that your destination is just that, a castle in the country. The nearest small town is more than 15 minutes away, and a larger town is twice that distance. Nevertheless, the luxurious accommodations, spa rooms, on-site shopping, country views and attentive staff make it easy to understand why people from around Michigan make this an annual getaway. Guests stay in either the Castle or Castle Keep. The Castle is a magnificently restored 1906 home with five guest rooms. While quaintly Victorian, the rooms won't overwhelm you with lace doilies, scented potpourri or tasseled pulls. And the bathrooms will leave no one disappointed (which isn't always the case with Victorian homes turned B&B). Castle Keep features an additional five guest rooms, dining, spa rooms and a small shop. This building is nondescript on the outside, but the rooms are distinct and elegant. King Arthur Suite's cathedral ceilings are painted rich midnight blue, and huge windows overlook Emerson Lake. Guinevere Suite features a Mediterranean-style tile whirlpool, and a beautiful faux balcony graces (of course) the Romeo and Juliet Suite. You'll find a gas fireplace and a whirlpool tub for two in each room. The point of this remote spot is to turn off those phones and computers, but if you absolutely must, rest assured that you can get cell-phone reception and Wi-Fi throughout. The lodge sits on 65 wooded acres with a lake and a small pond. Paddle out in one of the boats or kayaks during the warm months, or strap on snowshoes for a winter walk in the woods. Just want to sit and soak it all in? Choose from an impressive three-level deck with bistro tables, a beautiful canopied space, a propane-fueled fire pit and a gazebo. Since the resort caters to couples, a majority of their guest take advantage of packages offering special pricing on meals, couple's massages, winery coupons, chocolates, flowers or breakfast in bed. They'll even customize a package for you. From $189.
