Good burgers become great with all the extras hereand the price can't be beat.
Served up anywhere else, the burgers at Slabtown in Traverse City would probably taste just a bit better than average--but it's the extras that make this shop worth the trip. First of all, the burgers are cheap--really cheap--at $1.95 for a single and $2.95 for a double, served hot, fresh and fully loaded with ketchup, mustard, pickle and onion. We had a green olive and Swiss cheeseburger, hand-cut fries and a soda for less than $6. Second, the meals come picnic-ready for Sleeping Bear Dunes, the beach or wherever else you're headed; place your order and they'll write your name on the brown paper sack you'll take with you when you leave. You may not want to leave, though--we didn't. Slabtown Burgers is housed in a cute yellow home with a white wraparound porch, conveniently located right downtown. Inside, the dcor is trendy, clean and fun, with purple and green paint, a chalkboard menu, and a half-dozen tables with paper-towel rolls and bottles of vinegar. On the walls are vintage photos to study while you wait, though the service is good and fast. Outside is just as pleasant, whether you choose the porch or any of the picnic tables in the yard. Note: There's no parking lot and Slabtown seems to be a favorite among locals. If you're making a quick stop with the kids, you may want to avoid the peak of the lunch hour.
