Greektown was once an enclave for Detroit's Greek population, but these days most of what remains is a bustling restaurant district where Pegasus is a major presence. An interior of warm wood and overhead grape vines conjures up the proper mood for a menu featuring a huge variety of Greek favorites as well as less-well-known Mediterranean specialties. You'll find moussaka, gyros, dolmathakia and kabobs alongside kalamarakia tiganita (fried squid served with rice or potatoes), spanakorizo (spinach rice backed with onions and tomatoes) and yemistes piperies (roasted hot peppers stuffed with feta cheese and spices). The signature dish is saganaki haloumi, goat cheese served with flaming brandy -- Greek-speaking waiters bring it to the table and let out an exuberant yell before igniting. Most entrees run in the $11 to $15 range, except lamb chops, steaks and some seafood, which can run to $28. Don't skip dessert. In addition to the traditional baklava, they also serve bougatsa (warm filo pastry with custard), giaorti (homemade yogurt with honey) and loukoumades (fritters dipped in hot honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts). If you're looking for a bargain, arrive before 5:30 p.m. and, for the price of a drink in the bar, you can nosh on meatballs, cheese sticks and olives. The Greektown Casino-Hotel is nearby, and Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park and the Detroit Lions' Ford Field are within walking distance of Pegasus Tavern.
