Smack dab in the middle of downtown—just a mussel's throw from the river—is what might be considered the city's enduring anchor: Water Street Inn Established in 1890, it initially served as the Lumber Exchange Building and still retains original tin ceilings. Through the years, the building exchanged many hands until three innkeepers took over and restored the building to its natural splendor in the early 90s. Remodeled again in 2009, the hotel features 41 rooms, all with period furniture (lots of dark wood and rich red fabrics), whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces.
