A stay at the Rivertown Inn feels just like slipping into the pages of a Victorian novel. The main house, built in 1882, is divided into three suites and four bedchambers, each named for a 19th-century novelist, poet or literary figure. Two additional suites are in the carriage house out back, perfect for honeymooning couples or privacy-seekers. All rooms include gas fireplaces and private baths with double whirlpool tubs. Rooms are packed with antiques and period pieces, many of which have a unique story that either the on-site innkeeper or the proprietor will be happy to share. The inn is luxurious -- stained glass, crystal chandeliers, hand-painted wallpaper -- yet somehow retains a comforting, homey feel.Some inns miss the mark at breakfast, but Rivertown employs the gourmet services of chef Ray Wyatt. And oh, mercy -- the food is unparalleled. In addition to a multicourse breakfast (for instance, roast pear with chai cookie-and-spice wine syrup, dark chocolate pancakes with Belgian chocolate sauce, scrambled egg with a leek ragout, and crisp Berkshire bacon, orange juice and freshly baked muffins) served in the dining room, the inn on occasion hosts specialty fine-dining events for $50/person and wine tastings for $30/person.
