There’s almost always a wait for tables at Morning Star Cafe, but the delicious food and friendly staff make dining here worth it. Wholesome and hearty are the best ways to describe the menu, highlighting whole-grain breads, fresh local produce and Michigan maple syrup. There are tons of vegetarian items, and many dishes have a distinctively Southwestern flavor.
Case in point, the Bacado omelet ($8.25) is stuffed with bacon, avocado, cilantro and Monterey Jack cheese and comes with spicy red-skin potatoes and your choice of nine different types of bread, including warm tortillas and gluten-free millet toast. The oats deluxe ($5.75) is breakfast comfort food at its best: hot oatmeal topped with apples, walnuts and dried cherries with a skewer of fresh fruit on the side. Other morning offerings take in a tempting array of scrambles, frittatas, quesadillas, pancakes and eggs Benedict.
The lunch menu continues the Southwestern theme with black bean chili over rice, quesadillas, tacos and chicken salads (most items run $7 to $9). As if that’s not enough to make hungry diners swoon, a selection of pastries and baked goods like cinnamon roll bread pudding and something called chocolate therapy make it nearly impossible to pass up dessert.
