This comfortable shop specializes in English tea, served by the pound, the cup or as part of the traditional afternoon repast, but there are lots of lunch options, too.
The English natives who own The London Tea Room have skipped prim in favor of warm and cozy, but still offer all of the accouterments of an English tea shop. Their open, airy storefront located in a renovated warehouse district may initially seem more like a coffee shop, what with the clatter of drinks being made and meals being prepared, but you'll feel differently once your tea arrives. If you're looking for that true British experience, use the vernacular and order a "cuppa" of the traditional Yorkshire gold with milk and sugar. Or be adventurous and choose from among more than two dozen white, green, black and oolong varieties. Yes, they do serve afternoon tea, and while some don fancy duds to get the full experience, folks in jeans and T-shirts will feel just as welcome. You'll need to make a reservation--and it's a bit pricy at $22 for one and $40 for two--but you'll be treated to your choice of tea served in Burleigh china, a scone, jam, Devonshire cream, sandwiches and cakes. Looking for that tea room feel but not in the mood for tea? Fear not. While the lunch menu seems more French than English, with its options of quiche, Croque Monsieur and apple-and-Brie sandwiches, you can also sample two English favorites: the cheese-and-branston (pickle) sandwich and the apple-cheddar salad. The shop sells loose tea as well, with prices for an eighth of a pound starting at $3.50 and topping out at $16.
