It may not offer anything strikingly original, but the Westside Local is a definite crowd-pleaser. Group dining (the kind where you sit with strangers) is encouraged at communal tables, especially outside in the biergarten. And speaking of the biergarten, group drinking is even more encouraged, with about 40 beers available, as well as wine and liquor. The beer list is heavy on local favorites like Boulevard, plus some Belgian brews and bygone standbys such as Schlitz. The menu includes suggestions on pairing beers with the cuisine, which consists mostly of souped-up sandwiches and burgers (served with garlic fries that garner raves), as well as a few fancier plates, like braised rabbit saison and sheep's cheese raveloni. For dessert, the item of choice, somewhat oddly, is the Mexican chocolate tart--slices are small, but the flavor is right. Most prices hover around $8 to $11; a couple of entres are more than $20. Atmosphere-wise, you'll find exposed brick in the old building and a funky mural inside the small bar area. The owners plan to keep the biergarten open year-round, using heaters when it gets cold; and feel free to bring your dog along if you're sitting outside--your waiter will serve him a bowl of water. The Westside Local opened in July 2009.
