Simply Stylish

Inspired by the Shaker tradition that embraced basic shapes, natural materials, repetitive forms, and down-to-earth function, Shaker Grove celebrates the simple life. Tour our interpretation, where you'll find modern, yet classic, ideas for bringing simple pleasures into your own home.

Introduction

Shaker Grove, the Midwest Living® Idea Home 2002, illustrates how busy families can find calm and serenity in a design that fuses form and function. Inspired by the Shakers, a religious order founded in the mid-1700s and devoted to simplicity and hard work, the home embodies one of their precepts: a place for everything, and everything in its place. Our home stays true to its clean, utilitarian roots, but also plays to the comforts and amenities that today's families demand. Yes, you can have the best of both, and it's a beautiful blend.

Architects Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker of Evanston, Illinois, based the plan on rustic farm buildings and old Shaker meeting houses. Sitting on a steep site at the Landmark Pointe development in Antioch, Illinois (halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee), the home shows two stories in front, four in back. The result is a grand panorama of Lake Antioch, a private manmade lake some 200 yards down the slope. Builder Michael Doran of Landmark Homes in Gurnee, Illinois, excavated and built Shaker Grove with a rear window wall and outdoor areas that accentuate the views. We selected low-maintenance exterior materials that withstand extremes of temperature and humidity.

Wrapped Right

Choosing easy-care exterior products helps simplify life by cutting down on maintenance and upkeep. But homes still need to be attractive. So although the siding used here looks like cedar, it's actually cement-fiber Hardiplank from James Hardie Building Products. The preprimed, insect- and fire-resistant material won't split, warp, or mold and has a 50-year warranty.

Another selection that adds more than good looks is the garage doors from the Clopay Reserve Collection. Their layered construction, with a linear design that fits the style of the house, helps insulate during Midwest temperature extremes.

For windows, we paired warm wood tones inside with low maintenance outside. The handsome wood interiors of Integrity windows from Marvin Windows and Doors blend with other stained hardwoods such as oak and maple. Outside, fiberglass and polyester-resin cladding eliminate yearly painting.

Step Inside

Shaker Grove's 6,000 square feet, and you'll find four distinct levels of living space: a main floor, an upstairs, a mezzanine, and a lower-level walk-out area (see floor plan). The main level includes gathering spaces in the great room, kitchen, and breakfast area, as well as an intimate and luxurious master suite.

Much like Shaker homes, where wall cabinetry eliminated the need for extra furnishings, maple cabinetry from Schrock used in innovative ways helps organize. In the hallway, for instance, drawers and cupboards stash mail and briefcases. A shelf skirts the mirror, where you can drop keys or take a last look before leaving the house.

Built-ins also keep clutter at bay in the home office, which doubles as a guest suite, with an adjacent bath. Custom wood blinds from Lafayette Interior Fashions blend with the maple trim. Indiana weaver Marcia Chambers fashioned the area rug, incorporating colors such as burnt orange, copper, and indigo from the room's upholstery fabrics.

You get to the dining room through French doors off the great room. The milky glazed table, chairs, and buffet from Ethan Allen suggest formality in this room that's ripe for entertaining.

Materials

Natural materials carefully chosen for their beauty and simplicity repeat throughout the house. Warm wood tones, blackened iron, and fossil-embedded stone tiles lay the foundation in the great room. The well-proportioned spaces feel cozy in spite of the lofty ceilings and two-story framed dormers. To evoke a sense of age as well as protect the walls, architect Stuart Cohen designed 9-inch-deep baseboards, a detail found in homes built centuries earlier. Aligned with the tops of the 8-foot solid-maple doors, a 3-1/2-inch chair rail wraps the great room, kitchen, and bedrooms.

From their company's extensive portfolio, Ethan Allen Chicago interior designers Sherie Thomas and Sherry Grapes combined traditional furnishings with more contemporary selections to give the home a collected-over-time look. The mixture of styles softens the clean architectural lines, creating casual comfort in the spacious living area. By narrowing the color palette and varying the textures used, the design's overall Shaker sparseness finds harmony beside cushiony upholstered pieces, graphic accent tables, and accessories both rustic and refined.

Cabinetry

Clean-lined maple cabinetry surrounds the 12-by-19-foot kitchen, which is spacious enough to invite multiple cooks to share in the prep work. Borrowing a lesson from Shaker artisans, who left their furniture handles dark or unpainted to hide dirt and wear marks, we chose dark-cherry-stained maple door and drawer pulls. The deep color and round shape lend just enough graphic appeal to be interesting, but not too flashy.

Glass doors front the upper cabinets, creating a lighter look while supplying dust-free space for collectibles. Stainless steel appliances contrast with the surface without looking out of place. A stove hood from Jenn-Air, with warming lights, tops the 48-inch double-oven range.

Made from a quartz-and-resin composite, the granite look-alike DuPont Zodiaq solid-surface countertops require no sealing and offer easy-clean durability in the spacious work area. The distinct color contrast between the fine-grained Cloud White on the perimeter and the intense Galaxy Black on the island helps define the spaces.

The island and nearby breakfast table allow places to sit and chat with the cook during dinner parties or informal suppers. French doors open onto the cantilevered balcony for dining alfresco. An added Shaker touch: Raised chair rails, with pegs originally used to store chairs, display a broom collection and tab-top curtains.

The Shakers found beauty in the absence of embellishment, designing for function rather than frills. The clean look evokes a serenity -- something we tried to capture in our Idea Home by the use of light and shadow, as well as warm wood tones.

The boxy cabinetry and trim, plus the white rectangular backsplash tile in the kitchen and cleanup areas, establish a cohesive design.

We chose maple cabinetry, doors, and trim throughout the house for the wood's fine grain and ability to stain well. Its light amber tone casts a glow and contrasts with the honey-stained red oak floors.

Caring for Hardwood

Simplicity can also apply to upkeep. For example, durable hardwoods offer easy maintenance. Limit exposure to water, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and avoid abrasive cleansers. For cabinet doors with windows such as those in the kitchen and butler's pantry, spray glass cleaner onto a lint-free cloth or towel rather than directly onto the glass and nearby wood surfaces. Then, wipe the windows clean.

Mix Furnishings

Finding ways to mix furnishings and finishes can seem daunting. In the Shaker-simple style a little goes a long way, but there remains plenty of room for styles, patterns, and colors, from subtle changes of wood tone to strategic use of bold paints.

Design Tips from a Pro

In the master suite, interior designer Sherie Thomas created a romantic mood by combining glazed and whitewashed finishes on furnishings from Ethan Allen's Swedish Home Collection. The carved wood frames add style without being ornate or fussy. Rather than pieces fighting for attention, Sherie says, choose furnishings that showcase the architecture. Then, use accents in small doses.

Although the color scheme for the main living area concentrates on autumn's harvest -- pumpkin, squash, sage, and goldenrod -- Sherie incorporated rose and violet alongside the dominant greens used elsewhere in the house, downplaying the orange tones. The soft hues in the fabric bring a hint of nature inside. By varying colors slightly from room to room, Sherie advises, you tie the whole house together, without things becoming predictable.

Nature-inspired patterns and designs with more pizzazz than purity lavish the sleeping areas upstairs with a dose of excitement. Yet the repeated use of maple trim, raised chair rails, and cabinetry follows the established Shaker design themes set in the main living spaces below. Built-in units, similar to those used in Shaker dormitories, fill every bedroom with functional drawers, cupboards, and cabinets for storage. Replacing closets, the built-ins free rooms of clutter while maximizing precious floor space.

Personal, Yet Practical

The bedroom furnishings give each room its own personality. For instance, in the girl's room the painted-white Victorian-style iron bed and a painted wood night table and desk create a distinctly feminine attitude. The guest room combines a Shaker-inspired jelly cupboard and pencil-post bed with a more contemporary upholstered oval-back side chair, giving the room an appeal that entices guests to linger.

The color palette energizes the bedrooms. Shades of green and gold paint act as neutrals against the raspberry accents in the girl's room, and the cranberry and rhubarb tones of the guest suite. Fans circulate air; the ceiling-hugger styles with lights from Casablanca Fan Co. operate by remote control. Natural wood blinds softened by fabric coverings filter light. The colorful drape-and-swag window treatments in the girl's room sport a carefree style, while the valance in the guest suite creates a more tailored look.

Tranquil Living

With simplicity at its core, Shaker Grove embraces tranquil living on a nature-inspired site. The home's design inspiration dates back to the celibate religious order founded in the mid-1700s that numbered 6,000 adherents at its peak in 1840. By the early 1900s the Shakers stretched from Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts as far west as Ohio and Indiana. The last active settlement is at Sabbathday Lake, Maine, where a handful of "sisters" and "brothers" still follow the old beliefs. A museum, library, and shops are open to the public.

Innovative and industrious, the Shakers invented useful items such as a threshing machine, rotary harrow, and circular saw, plus they patented an industrial washing machine sold to hospitals. The group became noted for quality artisanship with simple details, from well-built furniture to finely woven silk scarves, from precision oval boxes and baskets to brooms that were functional, yet handsome. In the mid-19th century they ran the country's largest packaged seed business and were known for their bottled cider, maple syrup, and herbal remedies.

A Better House

Building a better house means finding cost-effective and energy-efficient construction methods. Both are essential to a home's ability to withstand Midwest extremes -- from freezing winters to hot, humid summers -- and avoid high utility bills.

Because of its no-warp stability, builder Michael Doran used engineered wood made from recycled lumber for sheathing and floor joists. He used flashing around all openings, plus a weather-resistant synthetic barrier ("housewrap") to direct moisture away from structural sheathing, thus protecting the home from water damage. Finally, adding an electronic air cleaner -- our selection from Lennox filters up to 94 percent of the dirt, dust, and pollen in the air -- improves indoor air quality and breathing comfort. On the roof, forest-green asphalt shingles blend into the natural setting. The roofing incorporates a five-part weather-protection and energy-saving system from GAF that includes a leak barrier, reinforced underlayment, and attic ventilation.
