Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon snipped, fresh rosemary or thyme, or 1/8 teaspoon dried rosemary or thyme, crushed (optional)
  • 20 1/2-inch thick slices baguette-style French bread or ten 1/2-inch- thick slices French or Italian bread, halved

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, stir together the olive oil, garlic, and the herb, if you like. Heat just until warm, and the garlic sizzles.
  2. Meanwhile, to toast the bread slices, arrange the bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Broil the bread 5 to 6 inches from heat for 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until golden.
  3. Brush both sides of the bread slices with the olive oil mixture. Makes 20 slices.
