Casual and Fancy Holiday Tables
Casual
Sweets play the starring role in this wintry tabletop pageant, set to entice the Sugar Plum Fairy herself.
Our topiary centerpiece on top of Grandma's holiday quilt starts with a foam ball covered in ribbon and dotted with cellophane-wrapped hard candy that's hot-glued into place. Form the tree trunk with a ribbon-strewn dowel rod poked into the ball and sunk at the base into florist's foam (sold at garden centers and crafts stores).
Cookies become edible place cards. The cutters double as napkin rings. We stacked everyday crackleware in sage and cream atop bright-red woolen scarves for place mats, or try loosely woven fabric fringed at the edges. Doubled-up napkins wipe spills and sugar-frosted faces.
You can stir the hot cocoa with candy sticks dipped into melted chocolate, drizzled with icing and decorated with colorful sprinkles.
The chair pillow repeats the star cookie pattern. Use a blanket stitch to sew the diamond-shaped pieces of heavy cotton duck around the center button on the pillow.
