ARISTOKRAFT CABINETRY In Hyde Park, we designed a custom-kitchen look at an affordable price with two cabinet finishes and unique cabinet configurations. We also built a third-floor office with Aristokraft cabinetry options. It's a smart idea: Built-ins offer continuity throughout the house, builder delivery/assembly and costs that can be absorbed into a mortgage (800/400-4265;

BULOVA No home is functional or finished without the efficiency and design authenticity of timepieces. We needed a variety of classic styles to blend with the contrasting designs in the many rooms of our two Kansas City-area show homes. Bulova had it all, including a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired mantel clock, a European-style wall piece and a simple vintage-look alarm clock (800/228-5682;

CLOPAY GARAGE DOORS With today's garage door accounting for a large portion of a home's facade, it was important to have style built into its quality. Practical yet beautiful, Coachman and Reserve Collection garage doors from Clopay lived up to our expectations. Each set of doors became an integral part of the overall design of both our homes—and the neighborhood (800/225-6729;

DIAMOND CABINETRY Function was just as important as beauty for the cabinets in the kitchen of Longview Manor. We used Logix zone-outfitting for super organization. Cabinets feature slide-out drawers, segmented super Susans, pot-and-pan racks, cutlery cabinets, pull-out pantries and a variety of other storage innovations that large-family cooks will appreciate (800/342-5590; www.diamond

BROYHILL FURNITURE Decorating a large home like Longview Manor required a lot of furniture, including bedroom, dining room, living room, home office, home entertainment, upholstery and leather pieces. Broyhill's many collections gave us a breadth of stylish choices. We mixed classic collections and contemporary looks for an updated take on European traditional style (800/327-6944;

CABOT STAINInside or out, wood surfaces add warmth and style to a home. We stained wood floors in both homes to match kitchen cabinetry. In Longview Manor, we also stained all the interior doors. At Hyde Park, solid-color exterior stain protects the covered deck and railings. Enriching and protecting our homes with Cabot products ensured beautiful, long-lasting results (800/877-8246;

DELTA FAUCET COMPANY; BRIZO In Hyde Park, a high-arc Delta kitchen faucet accommodates stockpots and tall vases. In the master bath, Brizo's Vesi Custom Shower System with H20kinetic technology delivers a high-flow experience using droplet size, velocity, spray action and thermal dynamics, yet conserves water (800/345-3358; 877/345-2749;

FISHER & PAYKEL APPLIANCES In our sleek Hyde Park kitchen, we wanted a stainless-steel look, but one that resists the fingerprints common to most stainless pieces. The Iridium finish from Fisher & Paykel solved that problem. We used two ergonomically designed single DishDrawers on either side of the kitchen sink, providing dishwashing for any occasion, with no bending (800/863-5394;

JAMES HARDIE BUILDING PRODUCTS It was important to us to reproduce historic Kansas City character on the exteriors of our two homes. James Hardie siding requires little maintenance, yet, unlike vinyl, looks like real wood. It holds up admirably to Midwest weather. Colors won't fade, and painting will last longer because the siding doesn't expand, crack or rot (888/542-7343;

JENN-AIR Multi-functional and solid-performing kitchen appliances were important to handle the demands of the large family at Longview Manor. Jenn-Air's 48-inch gas range offers six burners and a grill for multiple cooking chores. In small appliances, we looked for extra style. Attrezzi stand mixers and blenders with copper and glass finishes make artistic statements in our kitchen (800/536-6247;

SCHLAGE In Hyde Park, we chose door hardware in a lifetime-guaranteed, clear-coated finish of Satin Nickel to coordinate with our silver accessorizing. Like jewelry, hardware adds sparkle and style to a home's overall design. Details like the distinctive egg-shape knobs used throughout the interior are not only fashionable, but are easier to turn for an older homeowner (800/847-1864;

JELD-WEN WINDOWS & DOORS Perfect for the Midwest, the IWP Aurora composite exterior front door at Longview Manor is engineered to withstand the rigors of nearly any environment, while duplicating exactly the look and feel of solid wood doors. Energy efficiency, style and craftsmanship are built into the aluminum-clad wood windows we used in both homes (800/535-3936;

LENNOX HEATING & COOLING (& FIREPLACES) Internal home comfort is important year-round. That's why we chose heating and cooling systems (awarded the EPA Energy Star) in both homes that integrate consistent temperature control, quiet operation, balanced humidity and improved air quality. We also feature both electric and gas Lennox fireplaces in Longview Manor (800/953-6669;

WILSONART FLOORING In the third-floor office of Hyde Park, we wanted a floor that would stand up to business. Wilsonart's wood-look laminate is easy to install and ultra-durable, yet costs one-third less than wood. Other benefits: high UV resistance prevents fading, and the flooring doesn't trap dirt, so most spills can be cleaned up with a sponge (800/710-8846; www.wilsonart
