Idea Homes 2003 Resource Guide

Each idea home blends tradition with 21st-century amenities you expect. These innovative products from our sponsor partners can add convenience and style to your home, too.

ACE HARDWARE Washability, one-coat coverage and color selection helped make Ace Royal Paint the choice for both our Kansas City and Twin Cities Idea Homes. With high rankings from Consumer Reports, Ace Royal Touch and Royal Shield are warranted for 25 years; Ace Quality Paint for 12. 630/990-6600;

ANDERSEN WINDOWS When we wanted windows expressing the classic farmhouse design of our Twin Cities home, we turned to Andersen Windows' 400 Series. Besides classic styling and quality construction, it offer high energy-efficiency ratings that guarantee they'll stand up to those northern winters. 800/426-4261;

ARISTOKRAFT CABINETRY We achieved an upscale custom look in the Twin Cities Idea Home with Aristokraft Cabinetry. Styles from traditional to New Casual adapt to uses throughout the house. Mortise-and-tenon- joined hardwood face-frame construction makes these cabinets sturdy and long-lasting. 812/482-2527;

BMW With suburban commutes getting longer and more congested, driving to and from work in comfort and safety is a must. The 745Li sedan (above) provides plenty of power for merging into freeway traffic. Amenities such as heated exterior mirrors, a spacious rear cabin and aerodynamic styling combine luxury with performance.

BULOVA Adding to a sense of tradition in both the Twin Cities and Kansas City homes are table and floor clocks from Bulova, which has manufactured timepieces since 1875. These carefully crafted clocks were displayed in both Idea Homes in groupings -- a great way to show off collections or family heirlooms. 800/228-5682;

CLOPAY For the Twin Cities house, where the garage faces the street, we needed a garage door that complemented the farmhouse cottage style. With its window row and barnboard configuration, this weather-tight door from Clopay filled the bill. In fact, Clopay garage doors have graced Midwest Living® Idea Homes for more than a decade. 800/225-6729;

HOOVER The Wind-Tunnel Dual V (above), a powerful bagless upright vacuum, delivers deep carpet cleaning and uses dual brushes to separate fibers of both rugs and carpeting. To keep the expanses of wood floor clean in the Kansas City home, we chose the new Floor Mate cleaner, designed for both hardwood and laminates. 800/946-2570;

JAMES HARDIE BUILDING PRODUCTS Shingle-look siding gives an early 1900s look to the Kansas City house (above). In the Twin Cities, the siding recalls old-time farm-houses. We chose both for appearance as well as durability. James Hardie guarantees its siding won't rot, crack or delaminate for 50 years, and it holds paint longer than wood. 866/442-7343;

JELD-WEN WINDOWS & DOORS Style, craftsmanship and energy efficiency were the three must-haves for windows in our Kansas City Idea Home. Jeld-Wen metal-clad wood windows express the Arts and Crafts styling on the front of the home. On the back we added a modern touch, and more light, by grouping several square windows (above). 800/877-9482;

JENN-AIR We wanted modern, as well as practical touches in our Kansas City Idea Home. Serious cooks appreciate the touch controls and easy clean-up of Jenn-Air's double-wall ovens, with their sleek, stainless steel and convex curved fronts. We also used Jenn-Air's roomy bottom-freezer refrigerator and a six-burner cooktop. 800/536-6247;

LENNOX INDUSTRIES In both Idea Homes we used Lennox Home Comfort furnace and air-conditioning systems. Each won points for its ability to monitor temperatures and maintain moisture levels. We also chose the handsome Lennox Hearth Product gas fireplaces (above) as energy-efficient secondary heat sources. 800/953-6669;;

LUCITE INTERNATIONAL Lasco Bathware used Lucite cast acrylic on the corner jetted tub in the Kansas City Idea Home. This cast acrylic, with its strong surface and fiberglass backing, is designed to resist decades of wear and tear, and comes in a variety of configurations, styles and colors. Clean-up is a cinch for this practical material: just wash it with soap and water. 901/381-2000;

MANNINGTON FINE FLOORING A hickory floor in a “cherry spice” color melds the Kansas City Idea Home's Arts and Crafts look with eclectic touches. The ScratchResist wear layer enables the durable hardwood floor to weather traffic. DuPont Teflon surface protector, a stain and soil repellent, not only keeps the floors looking newer longer but also makes cleaning easy. 800/356-6787;

MARQUIS SPAS Featured in both Idea Homes, these spas, with their extensive jetting systems, provide maximum water flow with penetrating heat that increases blood flow and loosens tight muscles. Marquis' comfort controls are waterproof, which allows them to be placed inside the spa for easy reach. A handy timer displays the number of minutes you've been soaking. 800/275-0888;

MAYTAG With no agitator, the Maytag Neptune washer in our Kansas City home protects fabrics as it cleans. An LCD touchscreen is programmed with instructions and wash cycles to remove 60 common stains. (It also trims about $150 a year from the typical water bill.) The dryer minimizes wrinkles with heat-free tumbling and by monitoring moisture content. 800/688-9900;

SILESTONE Designers of our Twin Cities Idea Home aimed for high style and hassle-free maintenance. The solution was Silestone natural quartz, a countertop with the beauty of natural stone, but without its flaws. Silestone resists chips, scratches, heat and stains, and never needs sealing. Plus, this hard-working countertop, available in 40 colors, goes with all sorts of interiors. 800/291-1311;

SUNBRELLA An inviting outdoor living “room” was important for our Kansas City Idea Home. Available in more than 100 coordinating styles, Sunbrella fabric on the chair cushions and the umbrella weathers the Midwest's seasonal changes. The durable, easy-to-clean fabric is made from solution-dyed acrylic yarn, which locks color into the material so it won't fade.

TREX Both the Twin Cities and Kansas City Idea Homes used Trex decking; the Kansas City home added a rail system. Made from recycled and reclaimed wood and plastic, these low-maintenance decks and rails combine the best of both materials. The wood protects the plastic from UV exposure; the plastic shields the wood from moisture. No staining or sealing needed. 800/289-8739;

WEAR-DATED CARPET FIBER For both Idea Homes, we wanted carpeting that looks great, feels luxurious and will wear well for years—even in lighter shades and high-traffic areas. Wear-Dated's wide selection of styles and colors mix beauty and durability. We chose a low-loop carpeting for the high-traffic stairs, and softened the bedrooms with a deep- plush style.

WHIRLPOOL Farm cooks might have served up even tastier pies with Whirlpool's slide-in oven range. Foods bake uniformly, thanks to the AccuBake Advanced Temperature Management System. Also in our Twin Cities home: the Family Studio's energy-saving Duet washer and dryer, and Drying Cabinet, which quickly dries delicates and keeps them out of sight. 800/253-1301;
