Country

An all-American style rooted in the rural way of life, farmhouse country reminds us of simple, honest labor and pastoral landscapes. It remains one of our most likable looks for its unpretentiousness, plainspoken comfort and connections to a simpler time.

Furniture Generally, country furniture is handmade in pine, oak or painted wood finishes, sturdy and utilitarian. Long farm tables, Windsor chairs and country cupboards are classic pieces. In our kitchen, we updated these country mainstays with decidedly contemporary black-and gray-painted finishes.

Walls Staples for walls in this style are painted plaster, white beaded board or wide plank paneling.

Colors Natural tones such as historical mustard or brick red are country favorites. We added pizzazz with a deepened version of pumpkin.

Fabrics Typical choices are cotton, linen, muslin and wool in simple ticking stripes, checks and plaids. Textures appear in weaves, needlework patterns and quilts.

Flooring The definitive look is wood, whether new or old. It may be stained, washed, painted in checkerboards or covered with simple rag, hooked, sisal or woven rugs.

Accessories Plenty of open shelves are a key to country decor. Stainless steel appliances and glass give our kitchen contemporary personality. Displayed pots and pans and growing herbs recall country kitchens past.
