Mix'n'Match Furnishings
Much as you mix and match your clothing, you can mix and match basic fabrics, furnishings and accessories to create a one-of-a-kind style
Much the same way you mix and match your clothing, you can apply a similar theory to decorating. Just mix and match basic fabrics, furnishings and accessories to create a one-of-a-kind style that grows with changing needs and tastes. Here are a few tips to help you create this casual and comfortable look:
- Start with a clean canvas. With so much going on in the foreground of a room, it helps to keep the walls white or light with simple window treatments.
- Pick materials you love.
- Be aware of pattern placement, and especially avoid juxtaposing two strong patterns right next to each other. If you're mixing fabrics on a sofa, for instance, make sure there's a neutral pattern between stronger designs.
- Mix fabrics on pillows and chair cushions. Assign a different pattern to each side, and get a new look by simply flipping the pillows or cushions.
- Use the mix-and-match approach carefully. Experts suggest using multiple patterns on just one piece of furniture, and keeping other furnishings in the room simple and streamlined.
