Blue Bedrooms

Garden delight

Create a light and cheerful mood in a bedroom with whites, blues and greens. An oversize, stylized floral wallpaper on just one wall gives the room a touch of garden-inspired whimsy. (Wallpaper on all four walls would be overkill.) Sage-green pillows add contrast to the white matelasse coverlet and shams and blue-and-white checked quilt.

Beachy retreat

Casual white beaded-board wainscoting and trim adds classic cottage character to a bedroom. Pair it with a relaxing shade of sage-green paint and beach towel-stripe bedding, as shown here, for a dreamy, seaside escape.

Modern cottage

Serene blue and cream bedding gives contemporary furniture a relaxed cottage feel. If your bedroom has natural privacy (a woodsy location with tall trees), skip window treatments (and trim) for a sleek look and great views!

Dramatic decor

Walls painted deep eggplant create a definitive backdrop in a master bedroom. Lime green in the curtains and accessories provides a bright accent. Black marble around the fireplace and traditional furnishings continue the upscale look.

Updated rustic

Antiques and earthy accessories give this bedroom a modern rustic aesthetic. To create interest in a large bedroom, highlight one area (such as the window alcove here) with a contrasting paint color.

Soft comfort

A warm taupe on the walls paired with luxurious lavender silk drapes makes this room pretty and relaxing. Textiles in silks, suedes and cottons soften a hand-painted metal bed.

Eclectic flair

A mix of exotic accents, including a faux-zebra rug, leopard-print pillows and crocodile-look leather ottomans, give this bedroom a modern look/feel. A warm brown hue on the walls looks rich and pairs well with rust and cream accents.

Tradition with a twist

Intense cool tones (blues and greens) on walls invigorate a traditional-style bedroom. Silver-and-white accents provide crisp contrast, creating a sophisticated scheme.

Masculine mode

Dark wood furniture and fit-for-a-king suede bedding create a masculine aesthetic, perfect for a husband's retreat. Warm tan paint on the walls and a few metallic accessories give it a luxurious feel.

Small-space style

For small or challenging spaces (bedrooms with pitched and low ceilings), try low platform beds, like the one tucked under the slant here. Add wall shelves for extra storage and a display area for art.

Quirky modern

Find a clever way to display a favorite collection -- like placing vintage handbags on individual box shelves above a bed. The handbags become unique, colorful art in this playful, contemporary bedroom, complete with a platform bed on wheels. A checked bedspread echoes the box shelves.

Exotic influence

Animal prints, rich colors and African textiles bring exotic style to a bedroom. In a master suite, create visual interest by painting a divider wall a color contrasting with the main bedroom and sitting area.

Room to relax

Built-in cabinetry adds function to this spa-like, aqua-and-cream loft bedroom. Interior shutters offer privacy in the wall opening that overlooks the living room.

Lovely in lavender

Vertical and horizontal beaded board, painted in dreamy lilac, give the walls and ceiling in this bedroom all-over texture. Leaf-green and white accents make it a whimsical, garden-inspired retreat.

Simple does it

Pure white cotton bedding almost guarantees a restful night's sleep. White walls accommodate a diverse mix of furniture and accents, such as the vintage colorful Crazy Quilt on the wall.

Farmhouse cheer

Make guests feel like they're visiting Grandma's house with a comfortable room inspired by country style. The chandelier complements the white iron bed. Layers of quilts, a floral bed ruffle and an embroidered pillow recall simpler times.

Bedroom on a budget

For pretty bedding on a budget, mix two solid-color cottons, such as the white and green here. Make inexpensive drapes out of fun discount fabrics. Add simple lighting and a contrasting throw rug.

Color creatively

Create a fashion-forward design scheme by mixing daring patterns (animal prints, damasks and checks) in complementary colors and varied sizes, like the pink, cream and chocolate brown designs shown here.

Transitional bedroom

Shades of black, white and gray create a classic yet modern bedroom. A suede upholstered headboard with a black platform base is an updated take on a traditional bed. Chunky white molding and streamlined accessories maintain the sleek look.

Room with a hook

Horizontal white molding across one wall, accented with evenly spaced knobs, offers creative display space in a bedroom. Used together, the knobs form a ledgelike place to prop items, such as this painting. Individually, they are hooks for items such as the straw hat.

Playful nature

A porthole window adds architectural interest to a vaulted wall, while the wallpaper in an overscale Queen Anne's lace pattern gives it vibrant style. Colorful quilts and a fuchsia upholstered chair complete this cheerful room.

Old and new

A whitewashed bed frame and painted bench mix with pretty new bedding to create a welcoming haven in a renovated farmhouse. An old painted screen door takes the place of a traditional closet door.

Pretty in pink

A cottage-style bedroom gets a flirty, feminine update with bubblegum pink beaded-board walls. A rug and accent pillows add just the right amount of floral pattern.

Seasonal slumber

High-thread-count sheets and soft-to-touch satin pillows make any bed look and feel more inviting. To update bedding seasonally, simply change accent pillows. Go green for spring, chocolate for fall. For an added treat, switch out flowers, shells or pinecones on the nightstand to reflect the season.

Secret garden

A green-and-white palette with hints of pink and blue makes this bedroom feel as if you're stepping into a spring garden. Plain white walls keep the focus on the colors of the bedding and upholstery. A large bay window fills the room with light and is the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee.

Easy country

Give a bedroom relaxed country style with red or blue gingham bedding. Turn fabric scraps into drawer pulls on an old dresser.

Clean eclectic

Large shelves built into eaves create the perfect display area for interesting art and collections in an attic bedroom. The all-white backdrop provides a united ground that showcases, rather than competes with, the different hues of each piece.

Modern loft

Clean-lined wood furnishings match the contemporary mood of a lofted bedroom. A wall cutout opens to the kitchen below. For privacy, a cherry shoji, hung on barn-door hardware, slides shut.

King-size escape

A rich leather headboard spans almost an entire wall, becoming the focal point of this masculine master bedroom. Chocolate-brown accents give neutral bedding and walls a warm feel.

Calming elegance

Soft yellows, ivories and aquas create a restful bedroom palette. Texture takes the place of pattern on pillows with tone-on-tone embroidery and watered-silk fabrics.

Summer cheer

Happy green-and-yellow bedding echoes apple-green walls in this summer escape bedroom. A salvaged window header pediment above the bed adds cottage style.

Loving blue

Love all things blue and white? Then this bedroom is for you. Blue walls and white trim set the stage, but the real charm comes from the mix of patterns and shades of periwinkle. A solid comforter keeps the combination of fabrics and colors from looking too busy. All the accessories -- from the lamps' blue-and-white shades to the blue-and-white rag rug --complement the scheme. Dark nightstands provide a bit of visual relief.

Double-duty furnishings

A daybed built into an inviting nook means a sitting room can double as a guest room. The window seat mimics the built-in bed and soaks up the morning sun. Wallpaper covers the ceiling as well as the walls, wrapping the room in color. A tailored valance and curtains lend a cheerful final note.

Romantic frills

Give a guest room a feminine touch with a pink-and-white scheme. Decorate with cottage roses, flea market finds and green accents. Twin beds tuck under the eaves, creating a cozy space. Pretty rose comforters, checkered quilts and ruffled shams pile on the comfort. An antique chandelier hanging between the beds sweetly completes the space.
