Longview Mansion Idea Home 2005
For those families who plan to sink roots into a home and stay there as the family grows, we built Longview Manor. At more than 4,000 square feet, this versatile home can handle evolving family needs. Starting with the striking two-story entry, it offers the comfort and culture of traditional style invigorated with bold colors, engaging spaces and a sprinkling of modern art.
Our family home not only provides separate retreats for parents and kids, but also has formal spaces designed to welcome the younger generation. For easy drama, put vibrant color on walls, like in our living room, but keep curtains, area rugs and upholstered pieces in off-white. Or do it the other way around, like we did in our family room. The living room is warmed by an innovative Lennox electric fireplace and a stone mantel by Wassmer Studios.
In the dining room, we chose a sturdy, expandable farm table with a painted finish. It's perfect for homework and artwork or playing games. We paired it with traditional Chippendale-style chairs. The furniture pieces throughout the home are from Broyhill Furniture.
The 10-foot ceilings throughout this home suggest the use of larger-scale furniture. The family room wingbacks are large enough for two to curl up with a good book. Elegant decorative rods from Kirsch, hung at nearly ceiling height in the family room, support tall, striped-silk panels that draw the eye up to decorative moldings and an iron chandelier.
Of course, it helps that these roomy pieces, like the sectional in the media room, also seat multiple family members. Painted wood blinds, also from Kirsch, quickly darken the media room when needed.
Tart and citrusy versions of the orange-and-gold color scheme in other rooms appear here in playful fabric patterns and accessories, brightening Cabot-stained oak floors. Rich-looking, two-toned maple cabinetry from Diamond stretches to the ceiling. Orange, gold, bronze and black accents in this kitchen enhance its traditional European design.
Our king-size bed almost fills the room and offers generous comfort for two-or the entire family with Sunday morning comics! Windows set high in the wall above the bed provide light with privacy. A Bulova table clock makes sure everyone's up on time. While kids play video games downstairs, parents can relax in the sitting room outfitted with a flat-screen TV, stereo-surround system, Lennox gas fireplace, two roomy Broyhill wingbacks and a huge ottoman. What you don't see is built-in cabinetry with a small sink, coffeemaker and under-counter refrigerator for quick morning or evening snacks.
Infuse children's rooms with the energy and life they exude. A can of sherbet-orange paint sets a playful stage for a mix of mismatched striped, floral and polka-dot bedding, united by common colors, in this bedroom for two girls. Simple white cotton shower curtains work as window treatments, and paper lanterns and clip-frame crafts store art add creative style. While big brother has his own room, the extra bedroom becomes the kids' retreat. We outfitted it with a bookcase storage unit for books, games, videos and collections. A desk provides a place for doing homework or using a notebook computer. Even the upholstered pieces in this room are bright and multifunctional. The aqua ottoman opens up just like a toy box; the orange love seat has a hidden pullout bed perfect for overnights.
Midwesterners tell us time and again that getting more sun into their homes is a priority. Especially in the winter, a sunny room can lift spirits. We designed Longview Manor with an abundance of tall, traditional double-hung Jeld-Wen windows. They feature no-maintenance aluminum cladding over wood frames. Inside and out, their divided light style and large expanses bring the house alive with light and views. Lennox heating/cooling systems keep the temperature even. With a large family, one outdoor space is never enough. Longview Manor can accommodate sunbathing, al fresco family dinners and more. A private brick patio at the back of the house is tucked out of the wind, next to a connection to the three-car garage outfitted with Clopay garage doors. The garage has a studio apartment above Over the large screened porch, a fenced balcony accessible from the children's rooms is great for lounging and soaking up the sun.
