Idea Home 2004

(ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2004)

HOW DO YOU BUILD a new 4,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, 4 1/2-bath house so it fits comfortably among older homes in an established neighborhood? This challenge, which Midwest Living® took on in the heart of Naperville, Illinois, an old farm town that has grown into a bustling Chicago suburb, is common throughout the Midwest. Families across the region are drawn to the charms and convenience of living "in town," but want new homes that are energy-efficient and require less maintenance.

The right partners were key to the project's success, and builders John and Stacey Schillerstrom proved perfect for the job. The couple, experienced builders on "in-fill" lots, has actively led efforts to preserve the character of older neighborhoods.

The result of our shared efforts is a jewel of a home with a profile that puts the bulk of the house lengthwise on a narrow city lot. Its Tudor-Farmhouse facade matches nearby homes. The design features classic architectural details, a hidden garage, a pleasant outdoor gathering area and an exterior tough enough to handle Midwest weather.

The interior designed with English details weaves a tapestry of graciousness and comfort. We're sure the mix of old and new in our home will inspire many ideas for yours.
