Shaker Grove Idea Home 2002

Shaker Grove in Antioch, Illinois, was inspired by the vision of a faith community's gentle spirit of harmony teamed with practicality. (Originally Published: September/October 2002)
  • Front exterior

Cubic forms and repeated gables lend the exterior an unassuming grace. Retaining walls help define the driveway and hold soil in place on the sloping site.

  • Entry

Built-ins, a display shelf and the staircase share the hall with a 6-foot Shaker reproduction bench made by artisan Marty Travis. Along with the stained-red pine floor clock, the setting defines the home's style.

  • Home Office

Tangerine-hue Copper Penny from Ace Royal Paints bathes the office in a radiant glow. A similar shade is found on the walls of a historic Shaker home in a Massachusetts settlement.

  • Dining Room

Creamy gauze curtains fall in waves from iron rods alongside Shaker artwork. The blackened light fixture adds graceful curves.

  • Great Room

Lined up like fence posts, rows of low-emissivity glazed and insulated double-hung windows keep the home cool in summer, warm in winter. Beauty meets practicality when a gas fireplace cozies beside a maple media cabinet, with slide-in doors. Curved brackets on the mantel add subtle contrast to a home design based on linear forms.

  • Kitchen

Delta's new faucet arcs gracefully above the sink. Morning light fills the breakfast room. The ultra-quiet Pro-Style Jenn-Air dishwasher integrates seamlessly into the island.

  • Mudroom

A custom stainless steel sink and counter distinguish the mudroom, which connects the garage and kitchen. The easy-access front-loading Neptune laundry units from Maytag economize on energy usage.

  • Staircase

Modeled after a bench used in a Shaker meeting hall, this 6-foot-long settee greets visitors in the entry hall at Shaker Grove. Illinois artisan Marty Travis hand-planed and finished the piece following methods devised by the Shakers. The hand-turned spindles repeat the lines of the stair rail balusters, creating a rhythmic design element. Shutters on the windows electronically adjust to filter afternoon sunlight. A carpet runner from Mohawk, of crush-resistant nylon, cushions the stairs and quiets stairway traffic.

  • Master Bedroom

A practical addition, the bench at the end of the bed makes an ideal dressing seat. A valance running across one wall simulates the look of a single window unit.

  • Girl's Bedroom

Soft sage green creates a natural backdrop for an arc of stars over the headboard. Layered pillows and window coverings decorated with plaids, checks and dragonfly prints should appeal to the little girl who calls this room her own.

  • Guest Bedroom

In a more refined setting, guests can write letters at the stained-red writing desk, a Shaker reproduction from Ethan Allen. The ocher walls anchor a sophisticated color scheme that includes accents of black, a color that used sparingly adds contrast and dimension.

  • Rear Exterior

You'll find easy outdoor living on the cantilevered balcony or lower-level deck. The wood-composite deck and rail systems from Trex won't warp, crack or splinter. Brick patio pavers by General Shale add contrast to the natural surroundings.
