Heartland Classic Idea Home 1998

Throughout the house, you'll see the warm, true colors of Heartland landscapes: sky blue, sunshine yellow, leafy green and cherry red. (Originally published September/October 1998.)
  • The Showcase Home

Timeless elegance and Midwest informality blend in this home. Outside, the exterior teams the textures of narrow-lap siding and cultured stone.

  • Living Room

A garden-fresh yellow-and-green cotton fabric links the dignified camelback sofa and a plump armchair. An ottoman covered in the same fabric serves as a footstool or coffee table, plus supplies extra seating.

  • Kitchen Hearth

The snug kitchen hearth shares a see-through fireplace with the living room. A chair-and-a-half in a homey red print faces denim-slipcovered chairs that you can move to the dining room for extra seating. An off-white mantel softens the fireplace stone, adding a display area for artwork.

  • Kitchen

In the kitchen's work area, cabinets with solid maple doors are finished in a wood stain with the look of cherry. The cabinetry's matte-finish black hardware complements the sleek front panels of the dishwaster, refrigerator, oven and cooktop.

  • Breakfast Nook

A handsome light fixture echoes the Colonial styling of the round, drop-leaf maple table and black chairs.

  • Dining Room

Casual denim slipcovers are happily at home with fine china and crystal. It's easy to change the slipcovers, edged in thick braid and held in place with simple ties. The glass tabletop makes the room seem larger and highlights the rich, vivid colors in the rug.

  • Sunroom

Upholstered in a botanical print, a pair of chairs flank a comfy sofa. It's covered in the same striped denim used for the chair pads in the kitchen's eating area.

  • Master Bedroom

Deep-gray-green walls contrast pleasingly with the creamy white woodwork. Graceful curves appear throughout the room, from the gentle sweep of the sleigh bed to the transom arching over the French doors.

  • Master Bath

Windows frame a whirlpool tub with a polished chrome-and-brass faucet set that includes a handy shower spray. A generous marble-tiled tub surround provides space for bath supplies. The practical show-no-water spots wall covering is a monochromatic print with a subtle stripe.

  • Guest Bedroom

A classic cotton toile fabric features 18th-century scenes printed in red on an ivory background. Butterflies flutter across a fringed red pillow that matches a comfy chair. All the patterns complement the colorful plaid comforter.

  • Office

Vertical lines in the wallpaper, as well as the big windows, visually expand the room. The wallpaper's broad beige stripe joins the neutral wall-to-wall carpeting to help create a light and airy setting for working at home.

  • Girl's Bedroom

The white woodwork frames soft-yellow walls and bright-green accents in a bedroom that promises sweet dreams. Hand-painted designs in primary colors enliven the simple bed linens. You could stargaze or just daydream on the broad window seat.

  • Girl's Adjoining Bathroom

Two lines of narrow yellow tiles set off rows of diagonal tiles in the tub surround, creating a subtle pattern in the plain white. Shelves above and below the recessed mirror over the sink add storage and display space.

  • Family Room

The tough tweed covering on the matching sofa and love seat stands up to rough wear. Welting along the cushions is the same apple-green fabric used on the upholstered ottoman.

  • Game Room

An archway leads to the game room, where a pool table shares the limelight with nostalgic collectibles.

  • Outdoor Living

A spacious deck provides plenty of space for cookouts and relaxing. There also are areas for outdoor living on the intimate balcony off the second-floor master bedroom and on the main level's big wraparound front porch.
