Midwest Fall Garden Guide
In General
You don't have to rely only on chrysanthemums for a fall floral display. Other autumn bloomers you should try include bottle gentian, toad lily, cardinal flower, snakeroot, monkshood (Aconitum arendsii) and bugbane (Cimicifuga racemosa).
Cooler weather makes planting easier for both you and your new perennials. You can put many of them in the ground up to six weeks before it normally freezes.
Wait until spring to plant perennials such as cardinal flower, bleeding heart, hellebore, butterfly milkweed, columbine, coral bells, Japanese anemone, joe-pye weed, pincushion flower, Shasta daisies and Virginia bluebells. They need a longer growing season to get established.
