Woodland Bulb Border Plan

About this garden

Just when you think winter is never going to end, the spirit-lifting little bulbs burst into bloom. With shimmering jewellike flowers and bright green leaves, these reliable plants are especially welcome after a long, hard winter.

These small bulbs are all easy to grow, and once established, many species will spread quickly, lighting up the darkest corners of your landscape. In fact, many of these early birds actually prefer to grow under deciduous trees in a woodland site. In this border, early tulips, crocus, scilla, anemone, eranthis, and leucojum are massed in a protected location under a clump of white birch. Here they'll receive enough sunlight to bloom, but later in the season when the trees leaf out, the bulb foliage will be protected from the hot weather.
