Heavenly Hydrangeas

The cloudlike flowers of hydrangeas are as romantic as ever, but today's plants bloom bigger, brighter and showier than Grandma's favorites. With so many types, you'll find one perfect for your garden.

'Everblooming' bigleaf hydrangeas

Bigleaf (H. macrophylla) hydrangeas, which include varieties that can be pink or blue depending on soil conditions, are a longtime home garden favorite. And they're even better today: Many new types bloom on new and old growth, not just on last year's stems.

Among the new bigleaf hydrangeas are Endless Summer, released in 2003, and Forever & Ever, released in 2005. "They're a very romantic flower in a softer, shadier part of the garden," says Linda Guy, new products director for Novalis, a national plant company that offers several bigleaf hydrangeas.
