Blooming Bulbs

Choosing Your Bulbs

Bright-red amaryllis and snowy paperwhite narcissus remain the traditional holiday favorites. But sunny-yellow or regal-violet crocuses, red-and-yellow tulips, blue irises and peachy-pink hyacinths can play starring roles as well.

Remember to plant the bulbs early enough to allow plenty of time for results. Usually, amaryllis buds begin six to eight weeks after planting. Paperwhite narcissus, a type of daffodil, needs only three to four weeks.

Some varieties require a lengthy cooling phase, so plan ahead. Or buy ready bloomers that you can transplant (for tips about care, check with your nursery or garden center, or visit bulb.com).
