Ten Best Annuals & Perennials

Sure, it's fun to try the latest thing in plants. But best of all is a tried-and-true performer that makes your garden look good while making few demands on your time. We asked two Midwest university experts to tell us about five perennials that bloom a long time and five annuals that wear like iron. They nominated new varieties, plus old ones you may have overlooked.

Annuals

Even though melampodium has been on the market a long time, Alan says it's a keeper because it's so easy to grow. It needs no deadheading, and seems immune to diseases and insects. Each plant makes a 10- to 20-inch mound of yellow or gold flowers. The yellow-green foliage stays fresh and blemish-free. 'Derby', 'Million Gold' and 'Showstar Yellow' all do well in Alan's trials.
