It's tough to tell whether National Ice Cream Day's timing is a happy accident or a planned work of genius. All we know is, by the middle of July, we're ready for any excuse to cool off with a dreamy dessert. Some of our favorite Midwest creameries are more than ready to accommodate us; on July 16, they're rolling out new flavors and special deals to celebrate what may be our favorite national holiday.
Graeter's Ice Cream | Locations in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio
The family-owned business started 147 years ago in Cincinnati, Ohio and has endured thanks in part to the French pot process, a churning style that makes small batches of dense, rich ice cream. On National Ice Cream Day, get a single scoop cone for only $1.47 at locations across the Midwest, and watch for new flavors all summer long. Graeter's Ice Cream

The Museum of Science and Industry | Chicago
Discover the science behind the dessert. The Museum of Science and Industry is teaming up with Nitro Dessert Station, Chicago's first mobile liquid nitrogen station. The contraption is capable of freezing ice cream in seconds, so MSI visitors on July 16 can witness the transformation from homemade base to creamy creation moments before trying the finished product. The Dessert Station will also make an appearance at the White Sox's Guaranteed Rate Field and Maggie Daley Park, and will be giving away free scoops at each location while supplies last. Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor | Ephraim, Wisconsin
This Door County favorite is serving up a special Bananas Foster ice cream sundae topped with hot caramel, pecans, whipped cream and a cherry to celebrate this Sunday. To sweeten the deal, say this: "I saw on your social media there's a deal to get a dollar off a specialty sundae." Works like a charm. Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor
Ted & Wally's Ice Cream | Omaha, Nebraska
Ted & Wally's is getting fancy for National Ice Cream Day: they'll be pairing their made-from-scratch ice cream with religieuse, a French pastry filled with cream (French pastry chefs will be whipping them up at a nearby bakery). Customers can get the religieuse topped with ice cream, whipped cream, a cherry and other sundae toppings. Ted & Wally's Ice Cream

Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery | St. Louis and Clayton, Missouri
Customers choose from "naughty" (booze-filled) and "nice" (alcohol-free) treats, and for National Ice Cream Day, the nice list is getting just a little bit longer. "Peach Perfect," an ice cream with peach cake and preserves, is the brainchild of a collaboration between Clementine's and nearby Eckert's Farms. The summery flavor is available starting this week and while supplies last. Stop by early Sunday; the first 50 customers get a free T-shirt. Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery
